Overview

Discover the Hidden Inca Fortress of Waqrapukara

Waqrapukara comes from the Quechua words waqra (horn) and pukara (fortress), meaning "Horn Fortress." Perched at approximately 4,300 meters (14,100 feet) above sea level, the site sits atop a dramatic rock formation overlooking deep valleys and the Apurímac River basin.

Although often referred to as a fortress, archaeologists believe Waqrapukara served multiple purposes, including ceremonial, religious, administrative, and defensive functions during the Inca period. The site features terraces, plazas, stairways, temples, and finely crafted stone structures integrated into the natural landscape.

Waqrapukara is one of the most spectacular yet lesser-known archaeological sites in Peru. Unlike more crowded attractions, visitors can enjoy a peaceful trekking experience while discovering a hidden treasure of the Andes.
