Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – Inca Trail to Machu Picchu - Pacha Expeditions

What is the Inca Trail?

The Inca Trail is the most famous hiking route in Peru and one of the best treks in the world. This ancient Inca road crosses Andean mountains, cloud forests, and archaeological sites until reaching the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), from where you get your first glimpse of Machu Picchu.

How long is the Inca Trail?

The classic trek lasts 4 days and 3 nights. Shorter versions are also available, such as the 2-day Inca Trail, ideal for travelers with less time.

How far in advance should I book the Inca Trail?

We recommend booking between 4 and 8 months before your travel date, especially during peak season (May to September), as permits are limited and tend to sell out quickly.

Do I need a permit to hike the Inca Trail?

Yes. All travelers need an official permit issued by the Ministry of Culture of Peru. Pacha Expeditions manages this permit as part of the booking process.

Can I hike the Inca Trail without a guide?

No. Peruvian regulations require all visitors to hike the Inca Trail accompanied by an authorized agency and certified guides.

What is the best time to hike the Inca Trail?

The dry season, from April to October, offers the best hiking conditions. April, May, September, and October typically combine good weather with fewer visitors.

Is the Inca Trail open year-round?

No. The Inca Trail is closed during February for maintenance and conservation work.

How difficult is the Inca Trail?

The Inca Trail is moderate to challenging. Hikers cover approximately 42 km (26 miles) and reach altitudes above 4,200 meters (13,780 feet). Basic physical fitness is recommended.

Do I need to acclimatize before the trek?

Yes. It is recommended to spend at least 2 or 3 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before starting the trek to acclimatize to the altitude.

How much weight can I carry on the trek?

Guests typically have a baggage allowance for porters. We recommend carrying only what you need and keeping your backpack light for greater comfort.

Are there restrooms along the trail?

Yes. Basic facilities are available at several campsites and rest stops along the Inca Trail.

Is drinking water provided?

Yes. Our team provides boiled and treated water during the trek for refilling bottles or hydration systems.

Are there vegetarian or vegan options?

Yes. We offer vegetarian, vegan, and other special diet menus. Just let us know when you book.

What if I have food allergies?

Please inform us of any allergies or dietary restrictions during the booking process so we can coordinate suitable options.

Can children participate in the Inca Trail?

Yes. Children can participate as long as they are in adequate physical condition and accompanied by a responsible adult.

Can seniors participate?

Yes. Many senior travelers enjoy the Inca Trail. We recommend a prior medical evaluation and good physical preparation.

What happens if I get sick during the trek?

Our guides are trained in first aid and carry basic emergency equipment. If necessary, we coordinate evacuation procedures according to the situation.

What happens if it rains during the trek?

The trek continues even in the rain. We recommend wearing quality waterproof clothing and properly protecting electronic devices.

Can I change the date of my reservation?

Inca Trail permits are personal, non-transferable, and generally do not allow date changes once issued.

How can I book my Inca Trail?

You can book directly through the Pacha Expeditions website or contact us by email, WhatsApp, or our inquiry form. Our team will help you check availability and secure your official permit.
