Itinerary

First Day of the Short Inca Trail

Get ready for the thrill of the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu with Pacha Expeditions. Pick-up from your hotel at 4:00 a.m., transfer to the bus station. From there, you will take a bus to the Ollantaytambo train station. Then, you will travel by train for 1.5 hours along a very scenic route to kilometer 104, the starting point of the trail. From here, you will embark on a gradual uphill hike of approximately 3 hours (6 km) to the Inca site of Wiñay Wayna ("Eternally Young") (2680 m/8792 ft). Lunch will be served here.

Afterward, you will continue for another 3 hours along an easily accessible mixed-use trail to the "Sun Gate" (Inti Punku) (2730 m/8792 ft). From here, you will enjoy your first panoramic view of the city of Machu Picchu (2400 m/7873 ft). Continuing along the road that will take us to the city, where we will have a moment to enjoy the panoramic view and the magic of the city. Here you can take your classic photos of the city to explore it the next day. We then head to the checkpoint to board the bus to the town of Aguas Calientes. Overnight stay and dinner included.

Second Day of the Short Inca Trail

Rise and shine for the grand finale of our Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu with Pacha Expeditions. 6:00 a.m. We'll have breakfast at the hostel and then head to the bus station to board the bus. The journey, which takes approximately 25 minutes, will take us to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. Here, we'll need our passports and tickets to re-enter through Circuit 3. The guide will offer a guided tour (approximately 2 hours). You can climb Wayna Picchu Mountain (optional: US$60) (2720 m / 8923 ft). The ascent takes 45 minutes. However, this ticket must be booked in advance.

To return to the town of Aguas Calientes, we have two options: walk or take a bus (optional). There, you can have lunch and pick up your train ticket to return to Ollantaytambo and then take a bus to Cusco. The train service included in all tours is the Expeditions/Voyager.

Final Day Highlights:

  • Distance Traveled: Approximately 4 to 6 kilometers (about 2.5 to 3.7 miles). This does not include the optional Huayna Picchu climb which adds about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) round trip.
  • Maximum Altitude: Machu Picchu itself sits at an altitude of 2,430 meters (7,972 feet) above sea level. If you choose to climb Huayna Picchu, you'll reach an elevation of approximately 2,720 meters (8,920 feet).
  • Minimum Altitude: The town of Aguas Calientes lies at about 2,040 meters (6,690 feet) above sea level.
