Rainbow Mountain or Vinicunca, in The High Season.

The Rainbow Mountain, or Vinicunca, has its peak season between May and September, the dry season in Peru. The Rainbow Mountain, also known as Vinicunca, is a natural wonder in the Peruvian Andes, about three hours from Cusco. It is famous for its striped and multicolored slopes, caused by mineral deposits formed over millions of years. The Rainbow Mountain is a new attraction and the second most visited site after Machu Picchu. Experience the Magic of the Andes.

Weather Rainbow Mountain:

  • Dry, sunny days, but cold mornings and evenings.
  • Clear skies mean better views of the vibrant mountain colors.

Crowds:

  • This is peak tourist season, so expect lots of visitors, especially between 8 a.m. and noon.
  • If you want a quieter experience, arrive early (before 7 a.m.) or later in the afternoon.

Trail Conditions:

  • Trails are dry and firm, making for easier hiking.
  • The high altitude (over 5,000 meters / 16,400 feet) still makes it tough—acclimate in Cusco for at least 2 days first.

Tips Rainbow Mountain:

  • Dress in layers—sun and wind can hit hard.
  • Bring sunscreen, water, and cash (for entrance fees or horse rentals).
  • Consider a weekday visit to avoid weekend rush.

The Colors of the Rainbow Mountain:

Each color on the mountain comes from different minerals:

  • Red: iron oxide
  • Yellow: iron sulfide
  • Green: chlorite
  • White: quartz or sandstone
  • Brown: rock and sand

The result is a mountain that looks like it’s been painted in layers—almost unreal.

Overview:

  • Altitude: ~5,200 meters (17,060 feet)
  • Hike distance: ~10 km (round trip)
  • Difficulty: Moderate to hard (because of altitude, not terrain)
  • Best time to go: May–September (dry season)

Rainbow Mountain wasn’t widely known until about 2015, when melting snow revealed its colors and it started gaining traction on social media. Now it’s a popular day trip from Cusco, often paired with stops in the Sacred Valley or other short hikes.
