Viewpoint Three Crosses-Paucartambo.

Located in the province of Paucartambo, at 4,000 m.s.n.m. Is the Natural Viewpoint of three Crosses where one can appreciate one of the most beautiful sunrises of Peru and why not, of the world.

Paucartambo is located 109 kilometers southeast of the city of Cusco. The trip by car takes about 3 hours depending on weather factors and road conditions. Although the first section (Cusco – Paucartambo) can be done by car as the road is semi-paved, the second can only be done by van and you must drive 45 kilometers to get to the viewpoint three Crosses and Abra Acjanaco.

It has been given the name Tres Cruces to this Viewpoint, because in the winter solstices (in the months of June and July) a natural phenomenon occurs in which the sun rises on the horizon and when it crosses the humid atmosphere it is distorted as If it crosses a prism so three soles are visualized (for the same effect).

The first rays of sunshine start at 4.30 a.m. so it is advisable to be a while before to enjoy the event from the beginning. Many travelers attend the lookout during the main festival of the town The feast of the Virgin of the Carmen.

The viewpoint is located on the border with the Manu National Park. In general, the tours that take place to the lookout point tend to integrate both excursions.

Highlights:

  1. Unique Sunrise: The sunrise at Tres Cruces is considered extraordinary due to an optical illusion that occurs, making the sun appear to “bounce” as it rises. This phenomenon is caused by the combination of the high altitude and atmospheric conditions.
  2. Cultural Significance: The viewpoint is near Paucartambo, a town known for its vibrant Andean culture and the famous Virgen del Carmen festival. The festival, held annually in mid-July, is a major cultural event that draws visitors from all over.
  3. Scenic Beauty: Besides the sunrise, Tres Cruces offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Amazon Basin, as the site marks the transition between the Andes mountains and the rainforest below.
  4. Accessibility: The viewpoint can be reached via a scenic drive from Cusco to Paucartambo, followed by a short hike. The journey itself is filled with beautiful landscapes and opportunities to see wildlife.
  5. Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit Tres Cruces is during the dry season, from May to September, with the solstice period in June being particularly popular for witnessing the unique sunrise phenomenon.
