Current circuits for Machu Picchu: from June 01, 2024.

Machu Picchu will offer three new tourist circuits, combining ten visit itineraries and replacing the five existing circuits. These modifications aim to improve the visitor experience and better manage tourist traffic in this historic monument. The recommendation is that you book this visit to the wonder of the world well in advance.

With the arrival of the high season, and more visitors to the city of Cusco for its festivities and jubilee month, the Ministry of Culture increases the capacity of visitors to the Inca city of Machu Picchu. During the high season (June 1 to October 15 and December 30 to 31), up to 5,600 visitors will be allowed to enter daily. In low season the capacity is reduced to 4,500 visitors daily.

The entrance tickets have the entry time and the route to follow printed on them, with a tolerance of 30 minutes in low season and 45 minutes in high season. After this time, entry will not be allowed except for justified cause.

Ministerial Resolution of New Tourist Circuits in Machu Picchu.

Through Ministerial Resolution No. 000207-2024-MC published on May 13, 2024, the Ministry of Culture approves the “Protocol for the Management of Visits to the Llaqta or Inca City of Machu Picchu” which highlights new circuits to visit the wonder of the Machu Picchu world.

Article No. 3 (Equivalence of tourist visit circuits) said resolution indicates in detail the new circuits and their equivalences, which are shown in the following table:

General Information for Visiting the City of Machu Picchu.

Starting in 2024, the daily capacity of Machu Picchu will be 4,500 visitors, with the possibility of increasing this number to 5,600 on specific dates. This decision was made to manage the flow of tourists more flexibly and dynamically, depending on seasonality and demand.

This adjustment in capacity seeks to balance the preservation of the site with the promotion of tourism, ensuring that Machu Picchu maintains its integrity while remaining accessible to visitors.

Entry times to Machu Picchu in 2024. Are organized into time slots for different ticket types, and it is recommended to plan and reserve in advance, due to high demand. Visitors can choose the entry time that best suits their plans between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. and 2 p.m., depending on the type of ticket they have purchased.

  • Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu entrance:
  • Hours: 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., in four time slots.

  • Machu Picchu + Huchuy Picchu entrance:
  • Hours: 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., every hour.

Visiting Machu Picchu can be a physically demanding experience, and the physical condition required varies depending on the type of tour you plan to take. Here are some considerations and recommendations for those who wish to visit Machu Picchu:

General considerations:

1.- Altitude:

Machu Picchu is located at an altitude of 2,430 meters (7,970 feet) above sea level, which can cause altitude sickness (soroche) in some people. It is advisable to acclimatize in Cusco (3,400 meters) or in the Sacred Valley before the visit.
2.- Walk and Stairs:

The Inca citadel has many steep stairs and uneven paths. Moderate physical condition is adequate for most routes within Machu Picchu. However, some routes, such as the climb to Huayna Picchu, are more demanding.

Physical Requirements by Type of Tour:

1.- Machu Picchu:

Requires basic to moderate physical condition. Visits to the different sectors of the citadel involve walking and climbing stairs, but are not extremely strenuous.
2.- Huayna Picchu:

This is one of the most challenging routes and requires good physical condition. The climb is steep and can be exhausting, with a considerable gradient and very steep stairs. It is recommended for people in good physical, condition and without vertigo problems.
3.- Machu Picchu Mountain:

Similar to Huayna Picchu, but less steep. Still, it requires good physical condition due to the altitude and the duration of the hike, which can take several hours.
4.- Huchuy Picchu:

This route is less demanding than Huayna Picchu and is shorter, suitable for those with moderate physical condition. Still, it involves climbing some stairs and walking on uneven terrain.
5.- Inca Bridge and other trails:

These routes are less physically demanding and are accessible to most visitors with basic to moderate physical condition. They involve gentler walks and fewer stairs.

Recommendations:

1.- Acclimatization:

Spend at least two days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before visiting Machu Picchu to acclimatize to the altitude and reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
2.- Hydration and Nutrition:

Stay well hydrated and otherwise eat light but nutritious foods. Meanwhile, avoid alcohol and heavy meals before visits.
3.- Clothes and shoes:

Wear comfortable, hiking-appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes with good traction. Bring a raincoat or poncho if you visit during the rainy season.
4.- Health:
