Our journey begins in Ollantaytambo of the Sacred Valley. The starting point sets the stage for an unforgettable hike. The train tickets whisks us closer to the trail’s beginning.

With our tour guides with years of experience leading the way. We will navigate the scenic route with ease.

The hike to Machu Picchu on the short Inca Trail covers approximately 12 kilometers (about 7.5 miles). We will traverse cloud forests, revealing the area’s natural beauty and diversity. Along the way, we’ll encounter several Inca sites, each with its own story and significance.

Discovering Inca Marvels: Wiñay Wayna and Beyond

One of the highlights is the archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna, an ancient marvel not to miss. We will explore terraces that once nourished an Incan community. The site offers panoramic views of the valley below, a perfect spot for photos.

As we near Machu Picchu, the anticipation builds. Arriving at Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate offers a unique perspective. Views of Machu Picchu at sunrise are simply unmatched, making for an extraordinary arrival.

On the second day, we will dedicate our time to exploring Machu Picchu. A guided tour will unveil the mysteries of this archaeological wonder. We will learn about its construction, significance, and the people who once lived here.

Itinerary

Day 01: Day of the Short Inca Trail

Get ready for the thrill of the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu with Pacha Expeditions. On the first day of our adventure, excitement buzzes as we pick you up from your hotel early. Next, we zip you to the train station in our private transport.

A scenic train ride awaits, offering picturesque views. We’ll journey along a route rich with vistas until we hit kilometer 104. This marks the start of our trek on the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

Once we disembark, we gear up for a 3-hour hike to the Inca site of Wiñay Wayna. Known as “Forever Young,” this site steals the show on the Inca Trail (2680m / 8792ft above the sea level). Here, amidst ancient ruins, we’ll enjoy a cold lunch, soaking in the history.

After lunch, our journey leads us to ‘Inti Punku’, the ‘Sun Gate’ (2730m/8792ft a.s.l.). Brace yourselves for the first breathtaking, panoramic view of Machu Picchu. This moment, seeing the ancient city from above, is unforgettable.

We descend the final stretch of the trail, stepping foot into Machu Picchu itself. While today is just a taste, the excitement of exploring more tomorrow hangs in the air. We cap off our day by heading down to Aguas Calientes. Here, we’ll enjoy dinner and well-deserved rest, prepping for day two.

Day 02: The Short Inca Trail

Rise and shine for the grand finale of our Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu with Pacha Expeditions. Day two kicks off early, as we catch the first bus at 6am up to Machu Picchu. Breakfast fuels us for the day ahead, brimming with exploration and awe.

Upon arrival, a walking tour guided by our knowledgeable guide brings the ancient city to life. You’ll uncover secrets and stories of this mysterious city. After the tour, freedom is yours to wander and soak in the wonder of Machu Picchu.

Feeling adventurous? Take on the climb to Huayna Picchu. It’s a 45-minute ascent, but the views are worth every step. Remember, this climb is optional but highly recommendable for the daring.

After a morning of exploration, we reconvene in Aguas Calientes. Here, we enjoy lunch and collect our train tickets for the return journey. The train departs at 3:55 pm, gently winding back to Cusco where we arrive around 8:45 pm.

Return to Cusco in the evening, marking the end of our journey. This day offers a blend of guided insights and personal discovery within the iconic Machu Picchu. With hearts full and cameras loaded with memories, we’ll make our way back to Cusco, where our adventure began.

For those wanting more, an extra night in Aguas Calientes is an option. It’s a chance to dive deeper into Machu Picchu or unwind in the thermal springs. A perfect end to an unforgettable journey.

  • Distance Traveled: Approximately 4 to 6 kilometers (about 2.5 to 3.7 miles). This does not include the optional Huayna Picchu climb which adds about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) round trip.
  • Maximum Altitude: Machu Picchu itself sits at an altitude of 2,430 meters (7,972 feet) above sea level. If you choose to climb Huayna Picchu, you’ll reach an elevation of approximately 2,720 meters (8,920 feet).
  • Minimum Altitude: The town of Aguas Calientes lies at about 2,040 meters (6,690 feet) above sea level.
  • Difficulty: Easy

  • Oxygen Bottle: For your safety and comfort, an oxygen bottle is available if needed.
  • First Aid Kit: We’re prepared for any minor medical needs with a well-stocked first aid kit.

WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED:

  • Hiking Poles: These are not in the package. But, you can rent them from us for additional support during your hike.
  • Meals: Breakfast on Day 1 and lunch on Day 2 are not in the package.
  • Tip for Your Guide: Gratuity for your guide is at your discretion. This shows appreciation for their expertise and assistance.
  • Huayna Picchu Mountain: Access to this optional climb is not in the base package. It requires an additional fee of USD 60.
  • Travel Insurance: We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance for your trip. It is not in our package.

IMPORTANT: The hotel to use in Aguas Calientes is with all the comforts (hot shower + private bathroom + breakfast) or another similar; this can be upgraded if you wish, with an increase in price
